The new GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) will commence on the 25th May 2018. Its purpose is to provide a set of standardised data protection laws across the EU. The GDPR includes very strict fines for non-compliance with fines of up to 20 million Euros or 4% of turnover.

The GDPR applies to ‘personal data’ meaning information relating to an identifiable person. This can include name, location or online identifier.
The GDPR applies to all companies who hold and use personal data. The GDPR categorises users as controllers and/or processors, however in either case you are required to maintain records of personal data and processing activities. You will have legal liability if you are responsible for a breach.
